PRESS RELEASE:

BELLWETHER and CLEMENTINE are pleased to announce a joint exhibition of gallery artists in each other's project spaces: Steve DeFrank and Wayne White of Clementine at Bellwether and Sarah Bedford and Marc Swanson of Bellwether at Clementine.

By overlaying images of nature and popular culture through a variety of craft techniques - glitter, cake decoration and stenciled doilies - Sarah Bedford's paintings explore the transformative language of paint. Sly humor and fairytale scenes bring to mind a world where Currier and Ives meet the Beverly Hillbillies. Her painterly explorations meld charm, banality and cool abstraction to create work that is simultaneously enchanted and disenchanted. Sarah will have her first solo show at Bellwether in November of 2002.

Marc Swanson's sculptures and installations form an idiosyncratic lexicon of personal iconography involving several central motifs: gay fabulousness, the forest primeval, unrequited love, punk rock and NYC ghetto extravagance. For this show at Clementine, Marc combines rhinestoned pot leaves, a gay pride rainbow hunting target, and ghetto gold knuckle rings for each day of the week into self-consciously clich moments of raw sincerity. Marc is currently at work on an installation homage to his adolescence spent in the "live free or die" state titled "New Hampshire Hard Core" at Bellwether spring 2003.

Steve DeFrank will present childhood portraits of his close friends comprised of thousands of hand-colored Lite-Brite pegs on lightboxes. DeFrank's invented medium has been progressively evolving for over seven years. He has developed a complex dying process for the Lite-Brite pegs which allows him to create an extensive palette. Working first from photographs, then from meticulously painted studies, which are digitally manipulated into large maps, DeFrank uses between 20,000-60,000 pegs for each piece. Each image reflects not only a particular mastery of the medium, but also challenges contemporary boundaries of painting and sculpture. With recent solo exhibitions at Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery (Oakland, CA) and Clifford Smith (Boston, MA), DeFrank has been featured in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and ArtNews. His third solo exhibition at Clementine Gallery will take place in Spring 2003.

Los Angeles-based Wayne White will present manipulations of found lithographs and paintings. Disrupting the idyllic settings of these ready-made landscapes with cartoonish surrealism and humorous text, White references Southern California's cultural tradition-from the Hollywood sign to Ed Ruscha. Formerly a production/art designer for Peter Gabriel and Pee Wee Herman among others, White recently exhibited his work at Mark Moore Gallery in Santa Monica. He will have his first solo exhibition in New York at Clementine May 23-June 22, 2002.
